The collection consists chiefly of letters Stephen Come sent to his wife, Mary, between the dates of February 13, 1864 and August 29, 1865. The letters relate mostly to personal and family matters, such as the state of their health, and their desires to see each other once again. News about friends and neighbors is often discussed as well. Come appears not to have seen much combat action, but did write about his experience of living in army camps and his duties at the army hospital near City Point, Virginia. The collection also includes a number of letters Come received from Joseph Bruley, who served in the 30th New York Infantry from 1861 to 1863. Bruley wrote mostly about being confined at Libby Prison for several weeks from December 1862 to February 1863,
